Social Bookmarking

Want new audiences to discover you? If your website has a blog or you’re producing videos, ebooks or other online content, you may already be promoting it on your own social media profiles. However, your followers already know who you are. Social bookmarking is a way of reaching people who are interested in what you have to say but don’t know it yet

So what is social bookmarking?

The dictionary defines social bookmarking as:

“The practice of saving bookmarked web pages to a public website as a way to share the links with other Internet users.”

For example, if you have written a blog and published it to your website, you could then bookmark/link that content on websites like Delicious, Reddit and StumbleUpon. That is social bookmarking.

What does it do?

Social bookmarking is a great way to increase traffic to your website or blog as it makes your brand more visible online. It could also make your website more attractive to search engines thanks to lots of people going on your website and hanging around to see what you have to say. However, don’t overload social bookmarking websites with promotional links to your website or misleading people in order to get them to click. This could end up harming your rankings.

How to do it right

  1. Don’t spam

When you first join a social bookmarking site, you might instantly feel like you need to bookmark everything all on the same day. Not a good idea. If you are overloading the website with content, people will most likely skim straight over your stuff. Instead, submit your bookmarks over a period of time.

  1. When bookmarking your content, always use more than one tag

Most social bookmarking websites will let you add tags to your links. These tell people what your content is about. Using more than one tag will make your links easier to find.

  1. Make sure you only join relevant categories

Don’t join a category that is not relevant to your content. Not only will your content get missed by your target audience, you run the risk of sending the wrong kind of traffic to your website (traffic that leaves straight away).

  1. Establish a relationship with other social bookmarkers

This is really important as it increases the chance of them liking, commenting or sharing your content. Build a community of people who love what you have to say by involving them in the creation process or sharing their articles.

Now that you know what it is, check out websites like Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon and other social bookmarking websites. Good luck!
